Overview

Objectives win games. Kills are cosmetic — dragons, heralds, barons, and towers are the real path to victory. A team that controls objectives can be down 10 kills and still win because objective gold, buffs, and map pressure outweigh kill gold.

Every objective has a set of prerequisites. Before starting any objective, check: is the enemy jungler alive? Are our lanes pushed? Do we have vision control? Is the enemy team in position to contest? If the answer to any of these is unfavorable, do not start the objective.

Objective trading is a critical skill. If the enemy is doing dragon and you cannot contest, immediately do something else — take herald, get top tower, invade their jungle. Never stand around doing nothing while the enemy gets free value.

Dragon Priority

Not all dragons are equal. Ocean soul provides massive sustain — highest win rate. Hextech soul gives slow and attack speed. Infernal soul offers bonus damage — strong for compositions. Mountain soul provides a shield — good for tanks. Cloud soul gives movespeed — underwhelming but useful.

First dragon is worth contesting but not worth dying for. The first dragon spawns at 5:00. Track the enemy jungler's path: if they are pathing bot, they might do dragon after scuttle. Be ready to counter with vision or a herald trade top.

Dragon setup: 1 minute before spawn, recall and buy control wards. Clear vision around dragon pit. Pink ward inside the pit. Push bot and mid lanes before starting dragon. If the enemy has a jungler with high smite damage (Nunu, Cho'Gath), consider CCing them before starting.

Rift Herald

Rift Herald is the pre-14-minute objective for taking turret plates. Herald spawns at 8:00 and despawns at 19:45. The optimal play is to take Herald, have your top or mid laner pick it up, and drop it mid lane for first turret gold.

Herald is better than first dragon for snowballing. 5 plates = 800 gold + first turret bonus. Use Herald mid because mid turret gives the most map control. Bot turret is acceptable if your bot lane is fed.

Do not use Herald when your team is not in position to push. If you drop Herald alone, the enemy clears it in 3 seconds. Coordinate: push the wave first, then drop Herald, then group as four to protect it.

Baron

Baron Nashor spawns at 20:00. Baron is the most dangerous objective because a failed Baron attempt loses the game. Only start Baron when: you have a 3+ kill advantage, the enemy jungler is dead, and you have cleared ALL vision around the pit.

Sweep Baron pit, place a pink ward inside, and clear every enemy ward in a 2000-unit radius. If the enemy has vision of Baron, they can steal it. A single pink ward in the pit can cost you the game if the enemy jungler smite-steals.

Barrel baiting: stand in the Baron pit while your team waits in the bush. If the enemy facechecks, you get a free kill and then take Baron. This is especially effective against teams that do not respect missing enemies on the map.

Elder Dragon

Elder Dragon spawns at 36:00 after a team has secured soul. Elder buff is the single strongest buff in the game — it executes enemies below 20% HP. One Elder buff can end a game from a losing position.

Elder fights are binary: execute or be executed. The team with Elder wins the next teamfight. If the enemy gets Elder, do not fight — stall for 2:30 until the buff expires. If you get Elder, force a fight immediately.

Never 50/50 Elder. The execute threshold makes smite-stealing extremely difficult because Elder does a true damage execute itself. Only contest Elder if you can kill the enemy jungler first or CC them out of smite range.

Objectives are not optional. If the enemy takes dragon, you take Herald. If they take Baron, you take their inhib. The team that trades objectives efficiently always wins the macro game. Never let the enemy get something for nothing.
