Support is the most impactful role in the early game. You control the vision, set up kills, protect your ADC, and roam to impact other lanes. You do not need CS to be useful — your kit provides crowd control, healing, shielding, and utility regardless of gold. Learn about League of Legends role dynamics and how supports dictate the early game pace.
Support champions fall into three categories: enchanters (Janna, Lulu, Sona, Soraka, Milio) who heal and shield; engage tanks (Leona, Nautilus, Thresh, Alistar, Rell) who lock down enemies; and mage supports (Zyra, Brand, Lux, Vel'Koz, Xerath) who provide poke and damage.
The best support players think like a second jungler. They track enemy cooldowns, set up vision for upcoming objectives, roam mid when the wave is pushed, and keep constant mental map of where the enemy jungler is.
Engage tanks are the most reliable support class. Leona, Nautilus, and Thresh can force fights with point-and-click or high-range CC. They excel at locking down a single target and setting up kills for the ADC. Weakness: once they engage, they are fully committed — no backing out.
Enchanters provide sustain, shields, and speed boosts. Janna, Lulu, and Milio counter dive comps by peeling assassins off the ADC. They scale well and keep the team alive in extended fights. Weakness: squishy and vulnerable to poke.
Mage supports offer high poke damage and lane pressure. Zyra, Brand, and Lux can solo-carry games by dealing damage comparable to mid laners. Weakness: no utility if behind, and lack of reliable peel for the ADC.
Vision is the support's primary responsibility. In laning phase, ward the river bush and tri-brush to protect against ganks. At 7:00, start warding and sweeping the dragon pit area. Switch to red trinket (sweeper) at level 9 and keep 2 control wards in your inventory at all times. The Support role page on the LoL Wiki has detailed warding guides and champion matchups.
Key ward locations: river bush (tribush on blue side, pixel bush on red side), enemy jungle entrance (raptor bush, blue buff bush), objective pits (dragon and Baron), lane bushes (bot lane bush control). Rotate your yellow trinket to red trinket at level 9.
Deep wards are the most valuable. Warding the enemy raptors or blue buff tells your team exactly where the enemy jungler is. A deep ward at 3:00 can save your bot lane from a gank at 3:30. Coordinate with your jungler to place deep wards when they invade.
Roaming as support is game-changing. The best roam timings are: after a successful bot lane recall (levels 3-4), after pushing the wave into enemy tower, and when the ADC can safely farm alone under tower.
Mid lane roams are the most common. Walk through river, ping your mid laner, and look for a gank angle. Even if the gank does not result in a kill, blowing the enemy mid laner's flash is valuable — it opens up gank opportunities for your jungler.
Scuttle crab fights at 3:30 are critical. If you have priority bot lane, move toward scuttle to help your jungler. If you do not have priority, ping your jungler to avoid the fight and concede scuttle. A support's presence at scuttle often decides which jungler snowballs.
Bush control wins bot lane. If you control the lane bush, the enemy ADC cannot see you. You can threaten engages, zone them off CS, and create uncertainty. vs melee supports: stand in the bush. vs ranged supports: contest bush control with pink wards.
Pressure is your resource. Walk up aggressively when your ADC is safe. Auto-attack the enemy ADC when they go for CS. Use your abilities to zone rather than just to hit. Sometimes the threat of an engage is more valuable than the engage itself.
Protect your ADC at all costs. Your ADC is your win condition in the early-mid game. If your ADC dies, you lose dragon, tower, and map pressure. Sacrifice yourself before letting your ADC die. You are useful without gold; your ADC is not.
Vision wins games. Every time you back, buy 2 control wards and swap to sweeper. A well-timed deep ward in the enemy jungle is worth more than a kill. Your eyes are your team's most valuable asset — use them.
