The Radiant Dawn. Zenith Blade gap-close, Shield of Daybreak stun combo, Eclipse tank steroids, and Solar Flare AoE stun-slow engage.
Support Tank · The Radiant Dawn.
Leona's passive, Sunlight, marks enemies hit by her abilities — allies who damage marked targets consume the mark for bonus magic damage. This means Leona's damage contribution scales with her team's follow-up. Q (Shield of Daybreak) resets the auto timer and stuns for 1 second — her primary single-target CC.
W (Eclipse) grants bonus armor and magic resist, then explodes for magic damage — activated before engaging for maximum tankiness. E (Zenith Blade) fires a skill shot that pulls Leona to the last enemy hit, rooting them. R (Solar Flare) is a long-range AoE stun in the center and slow on the edges — Leona's primary engage tool from distance.
Leona is a level 2 all-in champion. At level 1, play passively and look for level 2 first. Once you hit level 2 (E+Q), look for an engage on the enemy ADC — E to gap close, Q to stun, and let your ADC proc Sunlight for the kill or flash. Leona's level 2 is one of the strongest in bot lane.
Coordinate with your ADC's damage patterns — Leona pairs best with burst ADCs (Draven, Tristana, Lucian) who can follow up on her CC. Against poke supports (Lux, Xerath, Karma), engage aggressively — Leona's all-in is much stronger than their poke. Level 6 adds R for long-range engages from fog of war.
Leona is the premiere engage support. In teamfights, look for R engages on priority targets from fog of war. Follow up with E to gap close and Q to chain stun. Her W makes her incredibly tanky in the middle of the fight — activate it before engaging for maximum effectiveness.
Leona can also peel for her carries — save Q and E for divers attacking your ADC. R can be used defensively to stop an enemy engage. Against heavy poke comps, engage immediately — Leona's team wins the 5v5 if she gets the engage. Against peel comps, wait for the enemy to use their disengage tools before committing.
Start Shoulderguards or Relic Shield. Rush Evenshroud for the damage amp on CC'd targets — this buffs your entire team's damage. Locket of the Iron Solari for the AoE shield active against burst. Knight's Vow to redirect damage from your ADC.
Thornmail for anti-heal and armor. Zeke's Convergence for bonus damage on your ADC's autos. Frozen Heart for attack speed slow and mana. Boots are Plated Steelcaps or Mercury Treads. Control wards are essential for vision control.
Leona excels against squishy enchanters (Sona, Soraka, Janna) who can't survive her engage. She struggles against disengage supports (Janna, Lulu, Thresh) who can interrupt her E or R. Against Morgana, bait the Black Shield before committing E — if E is shielded, Leona is useless for 10 seconds.
