Overview

Tank itemization is about making yourself as difficult to kill as possible while providing crowd control and utility for your team. The right tank build depends entirely on the enemy team's damage composition — physical, magical, or mixed. For a detailed view of tank item mechanics, see the LoL Fandom Tank page.

A common mistake is building pure armor against mixed damage or rushing too much health without resistances. Effective tanking requires balancing health, armor, magic resist, and ability haste to maximize your effective HP.

Tank Mythic Items

Heartsteel is the premier tank Mythic for scaling. Its passive grants bonus health on each champion hit near you, stacking infinitely throughout the game. This synergizes with health-scaling champions like Sion, Cho'Gath, and Tahm Kench. Iceborn Gauntlet offers a spellblade slow field around you after using an ability, perfect for sticking to targets and disrupting teamfights.

Sunfire Aegis provides area magic damage around you while in combat, boosting clear speed and teamfight DPS. Chemtank grants bonus movement speed when charging toward enemies, ideal for engage tanks like Rammus and Skarner that need to close gaps. Evenshroud amplifies damage on enemies you immobilize, making it the support-tank choice.

Armor Items

Thornmail is the go-to armor item against AD threats, applying Grievous Wounds when you take physical damage. It's essential against healing AD champions like Aatrox, Irelia, and Warwick. For more on tank item stats and builds, visit the Wikipedia League of Legends page. Frozen Heart grants massive armor and ability haste while reducing the attack speed of nearby enemies, crippling auto-attack-reliant ADCs and bruisers.

Randuin's Omen reduces critical strike damage by 20% and provides an active slow field, making it the best choice against crit-heavy teams. Dead Man's Plate offers bonus movement speed and an empowered auto-attack on hit, excellent for roaming and engaging. Omen and Dead Man's are often built together against full AD comps.

Magic Resist Items

Force of Nature is the king of MR items against heavy AP teams, stacking bonus magic resist and movement speed every time you take magic damage from enemy champions. It is the single best MR item for extended AP fights. Spirit Visage amplifies all healing and shielding by 25%, making it core on tanks with self-healing like Maokai, Zac, and Mundo.

Adaptive Helm (now replaced by Force of Nature's role) reduces repeated magic damage from the same source. Abyssal Mask provides MR while reducing the MR of nearby enemies, amplifying your AP carries' damage. It works well when your mid and jungle are both AP. Gargoyle Stoneplate gives a massive shield based on your bonus health when surrounded by multiple enemies.

Support-Tank Hybrid

Support tanks like Leona, Nautilus, and Alistar rarely have the gold for full tank builds. Locket of the Iron Solari shields nearby allies, providing teamfight survivability. Knight's Vow redirects damage from your linked ally to you, protecting your ADC. Zeke's Convergence burns nearby enemies when your ADC attacks them, adding damage while you lock down targets.

Thornmail and Frozen Heart are still excellent support-tank items on a budget. Wardstone (upgraded item) grants additional stats and ward capacity, essential for vision control in the mid-to-late game.

Don't build the same resistances twice. If you already have Thornmail (armor), your next armor item gives diminishing returns due to the armor formula. Mix resistances — build one armor item and one MR item, then focus on health and utility.
